Sematech moves jobs out of Austin

Sematech, a chip research company that has been headquartered in Austin since 1988, will be moving 100 jobs out of Austin to Albany, New York in a gradual plan to leave Texas.  A spokesperson for Sematech announced the move on Tuesday.

The state of New York has offered Sematech large incentives to move its International Sematech Manufacturing Incentive research program to the Albany NanoTech Research Center.  The program works to increase productivity in semiconductor factories.

In 2006, Sematech provided 500 jobs to Austinites.  Company executives say they plan to only keep 124 positions here by April 2011.
